Job Search Secrets – Three Simple Ways to Create Interest From Companies You Want to Hire You

Imagine if the three top companies you wished you could work for were aggressively pursuing you for interviews. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it? Well there are highly effective ways you can get companies to show a real interest in you. Here are three tips to get you started:
Tip #1: Informational Interviews Its super easy to find mid to senior level leaders and managers in most companies today. you can look to their website, ask for a referral from a friend or associate, look up a company using YahooFinance, look up the latest press releases using Google or look up employees of a company using LinkedIn – to name just a few ways.
After you have gathered a few contact names you can call them for an “informational interview.” These are no-pressure interviews where you essentially interview them about their position and/or industry. Your goal is to garner some valuable feedback and mentoring (by the way – most people LOVE to be interviewed like this!).
A key tip to master this tactic is to keep your focus completely on them – not you. What’s the number one mistake job seekers will make when they are using this technique? They act as if they were looking for a job. To avoid this – give yourself a break from job hunting and just allow yourself to enjoy uncovering an abundance of information from an industry insider.
Tip #2: Show Some Interest Again, its sooo easy to track the top companies that intrigue you – why not let them know it when they do something you like? Press releases you can find on their website or through Google about new products or services, awards, promotions, moves or expansions are all worthy reasons to make an introduction.
When you send them a letter about whatever event caught your eye, remember to include a copy of the article you are referencing. Not sure who to send it to? Try the person quoted in the article first. If no one is quoted, try to send your letter to a key decision maker 2 to 4 levels above where you would be in the company.
Tip #3: Use Your Creativity Is one of your top companies a sponsor for a big upcoming event in your city? How about volunteering to help with that event? I bet you would find other volunteers from your company of choice there to network with. Is one of your top companies a chamber of commerce member? They probably have a representative at local chamber functions too. Curious about what causes and non-profits your top companies support? It’s probably on their website.
Your time is more wisely invested by targeting a small focused group of companies if possible, versus a long list of companies. By spending just a few minutes doing just a little research and using these simple strategies to penetrate these companies, you will find your results improve tremendously AND your competition will decrease tremendously as well!
