A booming career is the result of lots of hard work and a network of strong relationships.

To be a high achiever in your organization, it is essential that you stand out, stay connected and brand yourself. Only then can you enhance your career with passion, potential and personality.

Build A Strong Rapport With The People In Your Workplace

The first step towards being noticed and making your presence felt is to make your presence known in the first place. It is a good idea to allot about 10 to 15 minutes each day to exchange greetings with your colleagues, employees and superiors.

Giving due importance to your colleagues or junior employees will enable you to gain their trust, as well as the respect and appreciation of your bosses. Do take care however, not to sound condescending.

Initiate Or Join Task Forces Or Committees

Start up or become a member of company-wide committees. This is a good way of networking with new people and opens up the channels of communication. Volunteering to lead a project also gives you the opportunity to showcase your skills and talents to influential people in the organization.

Such committees are good platforms for demonstrating management and leadership skills, and will bring you in the limelight for better career prospects in the future.

Sell Yourself

In order to have a flourishing career, you have to get noticed – at the right time, and in the right place. Selling yourself is simply the ability to persuade others that you have the best skills to take on a critical assignment.

Strong relationships are cemented when you are able to display your strong points effectively. Exuding confidence and being positive are the key traits that you must foster in your personality in order to let the significant people around you that know yourself. It will also help you build your reputation in the eyes of top management.

Assist Your Co-Workers

Lending a helping hand to your co-workers is also important. Having a thoughtful attitude will enhance your key relationships. Keep in mind that one good deed leads to another.

By helping others you are actually gathering support from them – you may need it later on.

Create New Relationships And Nurture Existing Relationships

Determine your goals and identify the people that you want to connect with. It could be someone from inside the organization or someone outside it. Approach people and establish a rapport with them; send emails or go to conferences and seminars and open the lines of communication. This will widen your circle of influence.

Maintain your existing relationships as well – go out on coffee or tea with the people you know and keep in touch with them.

Finally, to have a successful career, you need to project your achievements, experience and strengths in a way that enhances your personality and helps you to get visible, get noticed and get ahead.

Getting noticed, staying connected and enhancing your network are certainly key. Quite a few years ago one of my most articulate mentors affirmed that it was “never your boss that promotes you. It’s your peers, clients and direct reports.” Initially I thought he was nuts. I’ve learned since, that he was right on. Bosses usually want to know what a person’s peers and people think about him/her before they’ll even consider a promotion. Never seen this idea in print before.
