When you are interviewing, questions to ask are an important part of your preparation strategy. Employers expect you to interact with them, not to simply answer their questions about you. 1. How long did the person who filled this role previously spend in this position?

Many times the questions you ask are intended to give the hiring manager an understanding of your own priorities and demonstrate your potential as a candidate. However, this question is really more for your information. You want to find out right away if there have been issues with turnover or stability within the organization. If the last person to fill this role was only there for six months, make sure you follow up with some good questions to fully understand the challenges you will experience if you take this job.

2. How does this department fit in to the overall structure of the company?

This is a solid interviewing question to ask because it will show the hiring manager that you understand that a successful organization relies on its individual business units to work together. You want to know if this is a high profile part of the company, how much interaction you can expect with upper management, and the importance placed on your future boss’ efforts.

3. What would be a typical career path for someone in this role over the next 5 years?

This question shows the interviewer that you are focused on longer term goals, not just the position you’re interviewing for. Showing that you are thinking about future achievement and have considered your long-term career goals will create a vision in the hiring manager’s mind that you are not just a great fit for the job at hand, but will shine as a leader for the organization down the road.

Studying and preparing these top interviewing questions to ask is a surefire way to make yourself stand out from your competition. Remember, the hiring manager is most likely meeting with at least five or ten people as part of the hiring process, and you need to make sure they get the best impression of you possible.
