Are There Any Recession Proof Careers?

With the prospect of a long and deep recession, many people are worried about their jobs. Is it possible to find a career which is recession proof and which will protect you from the ups and downs of the economy?

Some industries are considered to be recession proof and it may be a good idea to consider them if your current job is under threat. But what if you are qualified or experienced in an entirely different field?

It’s all very well to recommend going into healthcare or education, two examples of career areas which will continue to thrive whatever is going on in the world, but what if you are not trained in those specific fields? Should you retrain? And what can you do if you can’t afford to retrain or don’t have the aptitude for the careers in question?

The first step is to look beyond the obvious. When we think about healthcare, we tend immediately to think of careers as physicians or nurses. But there are many more careers in healthcare and not just those which are directly related to medicine. So make a list of all the places in which doctors and nurses work and then ask yourself who else works there.

There are careers in hospitals which offer positions to people with a very diverse range of abilities and skills, from hospital porters to cleaning staff, catering staff, right through all the careers which are allied to medicine, such as physical therapy and radiology.

You can apply the same technique to education. Look at schools and colleges and ask who else works there besides teachers and professors?

Take this one step further and look at the broader field of education. These days everyone needs continuing education if they want to keep up with the fast pace of change in any career. So education does not need to be academic. There is a great need for people who can teach skills which are in demand in the workplace, ranging from basic literacy and numeracy skills to skills which relate to specific jobs.

Information Technology is another area in which will survive the recession. Since IT is needed in just about every career these days, you will have some computer skills whatever you do. So you could think about developing these to a higher level or learning some new ones. The good thing about learning IT, is that many useful skills can be learned from home, by working online and aren’t necessarily expensive.

You could also consider the possibility of combining two recession proof areas, for example teaching IT classes.

One of the best ways to recession proof your own career is to be flexible and look for new ways of using your skills within industries which will not be affected by the economic crisis.

Make 2009 the year you get the job you really want, despite the economic downturn. Learn how to recession proof your career.

  • You make a very valid point, particularly about combining two recession proof areas.

I was talking to someone recently on this very topic and when I asked her what she thought that the most recession proof job was she answered 'undertaker'! What do they say about death and taxes...?
