It’s a Lousy Job Market – What Are You Going to Do About It?

Unemployment numbers will continue to head in the wrong direction this year. (Up.) 2010 isn’t going to be a walk in the park, either.
That’s not doom and gloom. As Sgt. Joe Friday would say, it’s “just the facts.”
So here’s the question – knowing that, what are you going to do about it?
Are you going to throw up your hands? Put your head down, stay out of the way, and hope for the best?
Or are you going to take control, make your own breaks, and create opportunities where others see none?
A lot of people are worried about their jobs but aren’t taking any action because they don’t know what to do. Or they think there’s nothing they can do. They’re simply holding their collective breaths, hoping the other shoe doesn’t drop.
More than a year is a long time to hold your breath.
You can either believe you have no options, or you can do some digging and uncover them.
It takes hard work – no doubt about it. You need to be willing to adapt, to learn, and to get creative. You’ve got to develop a sense of resiliency. It has a way of changing your perception; with resiliency, you can recognize opportunities where others may only see bad situations.
Above all, you need to persevere even when adversity is staring you in the face.
Consider all the things over which you have control rather than focusing on those about which you can do nothing. You may be surprised how much influence you have over your circumstances – you really can make your own luck.
That well-worn phrase about making lemonade out of lemons may be cliched, but there’s truth in it. Give it a try. You may find yourself coming out of this downturn as a much more marketable candidate than you were going in.
