Is your dream job just a dream? Or can you make it your reality? There are indeed steps you can take to change from an unrewarding job to a fulfilling and satisfying job.
But where do you start? You hear and read so much about the slumping economy every day. That can be very discouraging. Many people are glad to have a job at all. But is “just a job” good enough? Read on to help you decide.
Start with analyzing the pros and cons of your present (or most recent) job. Your present job is your working model for designing your ideal job. All jobs have both good points and bad points, and these teach you a lot about your preferences when it comes to work. You can use this information to help you on your quest for your new and improved job.
Here’s how you can use your present or most recent job to design your dream job: Set aside some time to make 2 lists – job likes and job dislikes. Start by writing a list of the things you like about your job. Call that your A-list. Then write down some of the things that bug you about your job. Call that your B-list.
Here are some of the questions to ask yourself:
-Do you like the hours?
-Do you like the pay?
-Do you feel appreciated?
-Do you have a sense of accomplishment?
-Do you enjoy the work you actually do?
-Do you enjoy the company of your coworkers?
-Do you like your clients or customers you may have to work with?
Get the idea? Answer the questions above and any others you can think of. Then make up your 2 lists, A and B. Set the A-list aside. Take the B-list and re-write all the items as their opposite – what you would like.
Last, combine your A-list of positive aspects with your B-list of negatives-turned-into-positive aspects and, voila, you have your Dream Job Description.
Then, start doing some research. There are tons of jobs out there, and you can be sure that at least one of them has your name on it. It’s just a matter of knowing exactly what you want and then going after it.
If you’re not happy in your present job, why not make your No. 1 New Year’s resolution to find a job you’ll love?
