3 Steps to a Better Career and a Better Life with Telecommuting

Posted on 30. Jun, 2009 posted by Bill in Employment News

You’ve known for a while that you want to work from home, but you are not sure how to get started. There are probably many talents that you already possess that you haven’t been able to utilize fully through a regular nine-to-five job. How would you like to be able to use those talents to build a better career and a better life through telecommuting?

Read on to find out how with three easy steps.

Step 1 – Identify your specific talents and skills.

Before you start your search for a telecommuting job or start your own business, you may want to take the time to carefully examine what specific talents and skills you can offer. Create a list of these skills based on the types of jobs you’ve held, the projects you’ve handled and the feedback you’ve received. These skills can be concrete like being able to type, use the computer or telephones. Or they may be special talents you possess like being able to lead others, manage multiple tasks, or handle difficult people. Think back to some of the most challenging things you have had to deal with and you will surely think of things outside the scope of the average things you can do.

Step 2 – Determine how these talents translate to telecommuting.

Once you have made your list of skills and talents, you will want to then start breaking these things down further by how they will best work in a telecommuting job. For example, if you are seeking a telecommuting job working in customer service you may want to list things like being able to handle difficult customers effectively via the telephone or live chatting on the computer. If you are thinking about becoming a writer, you may want to list being able to handle multiple projects to meet deadlines. If you take time to think about each one of your skills and talents, you should be able to find a way to use them in a telecommuting role. That gives you someplace to start when designing your resumes and cover letters so that you will shine above other candidates who are vying for the same jobs you are. Or it may give you the idea on where to start offering your own services as a freelancer.

Step 3 – Start looking in the right places.

Now that you’ve carefully inventoried the skills you can offer and the types of telecommuting jobs you are capable of performing, now it’s time to start going after telecommuting opportunities that are right for you. Start by visiting online communities geared towards working at home, registering for reputable job sites, such as FlexJobs.com, that post legitimate telecommuting opportunities and researching companies in the industries you want to work in for possible telecommuting or remote roles.

By following the above steps, you should soon start realizing success in your telecommuting job search. This will only lead to a better career and better life for you.
