Your Resume is Not the First Step

Besides deciding on the “right” job to pursue, your resume is NOT the next step!

We all know that most employers are usually overwhelmed with resume submissions for their job openings. This is especially so with the aide of quick e-mail submissions accomplished through most job search websites and through “automated” resume submission services.

With that understanding, it makes perfect sense that “the employer” must find a way to screen through all these submissions. They do this through development of what we call a “short list”. This is simply a list of those that will “get looked at”. The typical resume submission will only get an average of 30 seconds or so to make an impression which will put him/her on the “short list”. So you can see that there needs to be “something” that makes you “stand out”.

Most often, those that get on this list have submitted a brief COVER LETTER to help get them noticed.

A concise, well-written cover letter can give you the edge by possibly pointing out any unique talents or abilities that you have which are not easily shown in a resume. It also gives you the opportunity to demonstrate some all-important communication skills that employers look for, even if they are not listed as a job pre-requisite.

Other things which should be done BEFORE you submit your resume is to do your “homework”! Yes, doing some RESEARCH beforehand can “make or break” your chance to get on the “short list” and a shot at an “interview”! Your research can include such work as reviewing industry trends that are applicable for your career choice, as well as examining potential pay scales, listing upcoming networking events where you may have the opportunity to make some important contacts. Certainly you should thoroughly examine as many job search lists, sites, etc as possible. Very often it is some of this type information which will go into your lead COVER LETTER!
