Job Leads Through Volunteering

The mantra I live by is preparation is everything – success doesn’t just happen; whether you are preparing for a new job; promotion; new client; marriage; college or graduation. You must focus on what you’re doing, where you want to go, and new opportunities and out of the box thinking. In this economy success is not going to happen the conventional way; whatever you deem success to look like for you! I would like to share a career nugget from Coaches Cafe’ concerning an unconventional approach to your job search.

It has been reported time and time again that the unemployment rate in the United States is at 7.6% up from 6.2% since November 2008 and climbing. Everybody is busy pumping out resumes and circulating on the conventional “networking” scene. You know the drill, posting resumes, attending networking events, attending all the job fairs in town, practicing your 30 second spill and making sure attire is up to interviewing par so you are ready to go at a moment’s notice; because you never know when you will get “the call” for that “BIG” interview.

Now is good time to volunteer which is great forum for networking. You may ask the question what is in it for you, the answers are plenty! Some of the things you gain in return for you’re giving:

opportunity to give back.

opportunity to help bolster your experience.

opportunity to create a network with your fellow volunteers that can refer you to job leads and potential contacts.

feeling of self worth knowing others need your services.

opportunity to remain motivated through your bout of under-employment.

ability to relieve stress.

ability to do something you care about.

Volunteering should be targeted, based on your current or new career path, present skills or the opportunity to learn new skills. The point is, know what you’re seeking and keep your options open to new leads.

Volunteering gives YOU as much good stuff as it does to the people, places, or causes you’re trying to help!

Next week I will discuss how to get the biggest bang for your volunteer hours.

Bill – - Over the years I've had several clients either land a job or make a great connection through volunteering. One that immediately comes to mind is a client who was extremely frustrated, so volunteered for a local Christmas In July project. As he was stocking shelves/unpacking boxes, he struck up a conversation with a co-worker who just happened to be the VP of HR for a local company. And yup the rest of the Paul-Harvey story is the company was looking for someone w/my client's skill set — he interviewed – - he got the job.
