Resume Cover Letters That Get Interviews – Discover Cover Letter Tips That Make Recruiters Call

A hiring manager uses the data in the cover letters and her impressions to sort out the good from the bad. Who do I see first, who goes to the pile, who gets pitched? The one with ten years or experience or three? MBA or MFA? Every part of your cover letter is weighted in the calculus of who’s worth interviewing for the job. Each element can be a reason for putting you at the head of the line.

That’s a lot of responsibility to lay on the shoulders of one-page resume cover letters.

Here are just two things you can do to help your cover letter give you an edge:

1. Emphasize that the recruiter is like you. It will only help you to show him how. “Last year, the economy was so bad we had to let three people go from the same team. How about your staff? Are they feeling the stress?” Then, once you’ve established some common ground, show him that you can do something for him. “Well, we all felt pretty helpless, but I could do this… and it was pretty amazing, but it worked. Of course, we’d need to talk about how that would fit into your environment.” Now you’re advising the hiring manager instead of sounding like you’re pleading. And among all the resume cover letters, yours is the one that presents an obvious reason to meet.

2. Be an interesting story to tell. People recount stories again and again. Brief snippets and anecdotes that they think make them seem more interesting or gives them a chance to engage with others. What story could a interviewer tell about you?

For example, imagine Jorge the recruiter sitting at a table full of co-workers just before a meeting. He decides to break the ice by saying, “So, I’m gonna be interviewing this guy who started a non-profit mentorship with at-risk kids at his firm.” Instantly, the guy telling the story is more interesting. He has higher status because he’s the connection to this story people want to hear. In fact, he’s looking forward to seing you. And you can bet that story will come up and your letter, unlike other resume cover letters, will propel you off the page and you’ll have a chance to connect on some level other than business.

Listen, you’re facing a huge opportunity. Every job applicant you’re competing against submits the same two docs – a resume and a cover letter. And they’re all wasting one of them completely. Imagine your advantage when you consistently knock it out of the park. Here are your two steps to take:
