Do You Have Too Much Experience – Are You Too Over Qualified Even For Self Employment

Experiencing one of the most dreadful things in your professional career, receiving a pink slip and then being laid off from your company can take its toll on the family, marriage, and finances. Perhaps, it is this dilemma, or this fear that causes so many people to look in an alternative direction. Many people choose to own their own business and don’t know exactly how to go about that. They often turn towards business opportunities or franchises; franchising being the safer of the two.

Franchise buyers inevitably want to work in the same industry that they are familiar with, and so they will seek out franchising companies that operate in those sectors. Unfortunately, if someone has too much experience in the industry it can be detrimental to success in that same sector. This is because they’ve learned how the Industry Association recommends that everything be done, instead of using the franchisor’s methods.

Most franchises have a standardized business model that works for their operations. It is not always but often dissimilar from everyone else in the industry. If someone has spent 20 years learning how to do things the other way, it is highly unlikely that they will follow the franchisor’s business model. Rather, their old habits will interfere with their success in their new franchised outlet.

This is why too much expertise in an industry can be a problem not a benefit. Sometimes franchisors will reject franchisees that seem to be over qualified in their industry. The franchise buyers can’t understand why on Earth the franchisor wouldn’t want them in their system, because they feel like they are very valuable with all their experience.

Interestingly enough, if too many people from the industry get involved in the franchisor’s system, it starts to change how things are done, and it will eventually take away the efficiencies from the franchisor’s successful business model. I hope you will please consider this.
