And I'd like to offer that a great alternative to “So what do you do?” is, "So what are you working on these days?" I've found that question to be very easy for people to answer and leads to all kinds of interesting discussions which can lead to an actual conversation instead of a hit and run type speed networking experience which a lot of folks find scary.
