Having the ability to create a portfolio career demands determination and strength of character. Establishing several streams of income is a tough assignment, but one which will bring huge rewards if you are successful. Having multiple streams of income is a goal many dream of, but few have the courage to pursue, let alone achieve. Do you have what it takes to manage a portfolio career?
To help you decide if this is the right way forward for your career, answer these questions honestly.
How adaptable are you?
1 I like to have a strict routine at work
2 I’m pretty flexible as long as I finish work at 5 o’clock
3 I like to be challenged and I’ll do whatever it takes to succeed
There are no perfect answers, but you will need to be flexible enough to balance a workload which encompasses several very different projects. It is a good idea to create a cut-off time for work, allowing yourself time for relaxation. But just don’t expect it to always be the same time and be prepared to forget it occasionally.
How organized are you?
1 I’m pretty laid back, but I always get things done in the end and usually on time
2 I always write a to do list for the day and make sure I finish everything on it
3 I’m good at balancing a variety of tasks and being busy gives me a buzz
Being able to organize your time and balance projects, manage time and keep people informed of what is happening are all crucial to the success of your portfolio career. But there has to be some give and take and you will have to be able to re-schedule meetings and re-plan activities from time to time.
Do you enjoy taking risks?
1 I plan everything in great detail and so I rarely have to take risks
2 I love taking risks, it gets my adrenaline going – the more the better
3 I don’t mind taking risks, but I weight up the pros and cons first.
You do need to be an adaptable, well-organized person who is not afraid to take risks if you are to succeed and enjoy creating a portfolio career. However, as with most things in life, moderation is the key.
